1219/1221/1223 W 36th St sits in the University Park area of South Los Angeles, roughly half a mile west of the USC University Park Campus. The street is lined with student housing and residential blocks, giving it a quiet, residential feel that is tightly connected to campus life and USC's DPS patrol zone.
The USC University Park Campus is reachable on foot in about 10 to 12 minutes heading east along W 36th St toward Hoover or Trousdale Parkway. USC Village, which holds a Trader Joe's, Target, Starbucks, and a fitness center, is roughly a 15-minute walk away at S. Hoover and Jefferson.
Exposition Park is about a 10-minute walk or quick bike ride south. It holds the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the California Science Center with Space Shuttle Endeavour, the California African American Museum, the Exposition Park Rose Garden, and BMO Stadium. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is set to open in September 2026, adding another major cultural draw directly adjacent to USC.
The Jefferson/USC E Line light rail station on S. Flower Street is about a 15-minute walk east; it connects to Downtown LA, Culver City, and Santa Monica without a transfer. The Vermont/36th St bus stop on South Vermont Avenue is less than a 5-minute walk west and serves multiple Metro bus routes heading north toward Koreatown and south toward Exposition Park.
Smart & Final on S. Vermont Avenue is a 5-minute walk and the closest full grocery option. Ralphs at 2600 S. Vermont is about a 10-minute walk north. For dining, La Barca on Vermont offers highly-rated Mexican food, It's Boba Time is steps away on Vermont, and Dutch Bros opened its first Los Angeles location near USC in late 2025, quickly drawing steady student traffic.
The Exposition Park Rose Garden on State Drive is about a 15-minute walk south and open to the public year-round. McCarthy Quad and other open lawns on the USC campus itself are accessible within a 10-minute walk and serve as everyday outdoor spaces for residents.
The Exposition Park area is in an active period of investment. A large mixed-use complex at 3900 S. Figueroa across from BMO Stadium is under construction and will add over 400 residential units with ground-floor retail. These projects are gradually adding services and foot traffic to the blocks immediately south and east of the property.
The property falls within USC's DPS patrol boundaries, meaning university security regularly patrols the surrounding streets. As with any urban Los Angeles neighborhood, residents should stay aware of surroundings after dark and consult the LAPD crime mapping tool or USC DPS for current conditions and advisories.
