1451 W 36th Pl sits on the west side of the University of Southern California campus, in the Congress North pocket of Historic South-Central Los Angeles. The block is a low-rise residential strip shared by students, long-term residents, and a growing number of purpose-built student co-living homes, giving it a quiet, campus-adjacent feel rather than a commercial one.
Exposition Park, roughly a 10-minute walk or less than a 5-minute bike ride south and east, is a 160-acre campus anchoring the neighborhood. It holds the Natural History Museum of LA County, the California Science Center with Space Shuttle Endeavour, and the California African American Museum, all within the same grounds as the LA Memorial Coliseum.
The Metro E Line (Expo) station at Expo/Vermont is about 0.7 mile away, reachable in roughly a 15-minute walk or a short bike ride. From there, a single-seat ride connects to Downtown LA's 7th Street/Metro Center in under 15 minutes, and on to Santa Monica in about 45 minutes.
Multiple Metro bus lines serve the immediate blocks, with stops at Vermont/36th and Exposition/Vermont less than a 10-minute walk away. Lines 204, 754, and the DASH F route provide frequent connections to USC, Downtown, and Mid-City without needing to transfer to rail.
A Smart & Final is about a 10-minute walk east on Vermont Avenue, and a Ralphs is roughly a 15-minute walk north on Vermont. For quick needs, an It's Boba Time and a Starbucks on Jefferson Boulevard are both within about a 15-minute walk. A US Post Office branch sits about a 10-minute walk away on Vermont.
The stretch of Vermont Avenue between Jefferson Boulevard and Exposition Boulevard has a concentration of student-oriented eateries, including Himalayan House and Manas Indian Cuisine, both within a roughly 10-15 minute walk. Northern Cafe, a long-standing USC-area Chinese restaurant, and several Jefferson Boulevard spots add more variety.
Exposition Park is undergoing significant investment ahead of the 2028 Olympics. The California Science Center completed its new Air and Space Center building in 2026, the Natural History Museum opened its NHM Commons community wing in late 2024, and the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is scheduled to open in the park in September 2026, all within about a mile of the property.
The immediate blocks around 36th Place are a well-trafficked student residential corridor monitored by USC's Department of Public Safety, whose jurisdiction extends into the off-campus area. As in any dense urban neighborhood, residents are advised to stay aware of their surroundings at night and to consult the LAPD Southwest Division and USC DPS for current safety advisories.
