PennDOT has finalized a $100 million plan to redesign the Squirrel Hill interchange on the Parkway East, which will eliminate a dangerous crisscross of traffic near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel by relocating ramps. The department has also received conditional approval to add a bike and pedestrian trail parallel to the inbound highway from Forward Avenue in Squirrel Hill. Construction will cause some local disruption on Beechwood Blvd over the coming years.
Squirrel Hill is a longtime favorite for families, retirees, and students due to its walkability, excellent schools, and strong community groups. Squirrel Hill South has very low crime compared to other neighborhoods in the city. As with any urban neighborhood, standard awareness is advisable at night. Renters should check the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and official city sources for current advisories.
