5845 Phillips Ave sits in Squirrel Hill South, one of Pittsburgh's most established and walkable East End neighborhoods. The area combines tree-lined residential streets with a dense commercial corridor along Murray and Forbes Avenues, and draws a mix of long-term residents, university students, and young professionals.
The heart of the neighborhood's retail and dining scene, Murray Avenue, is less than a 5-minute walk from the property. Within that corridor you will find Giant Eagle Supermarket and Murray Avenue Kosher at 1901 and 1916 Murray Ave respectively, plus Mineo's Pizza House, Aiello's Pizza, Commonplace Coffee on Forbes Ave, and Gaby et Jules Patisseries, all within easy walking distance.
The PRT bus stop at Murray Ave and Phillips Ave is directly at the corner of the property. Multiple routes serve the stop: the 61C and 61D connect to Carnegie Mellon University, Oakland, and Downtown Pittsburgh, while the 65 also runs to Downtown via Oakland. Commutes to CMU typically take about 10 minutes by bus and to Downtown around 20 minutes.
Carnegie Mellon University's main campus is about 2.2 miles away, reachable in roughly 9 minutes by bus, and the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland is accessible on the same corridor. A CMU Robotics Institute outpost is located on Murray Avenue itself, reflecting the neighborhood's strong academic presence.
Frick Park, Pittsburgh's largest park at 644 acres with over 17 miles of trails, is accessible from the eastern end of the neighborhood and is roughly a 10-15 minute walk from the property. Davis Playground on Hobart Street is closer, about a 5-minute walk, offering a neighborhood-scale green space. Schenley Park, a 456-acre park with a golf course, pool, and trails, is also reachable by the 61C or 65 bus within about 10 minutes.
The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Squirrel Hill branch is on Forbes Ave at about a 10-minute walk north. The Manor Theatre, a beloved independent movie house at 1729 Murray Ave, is around a 7-minute walk. The Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh on Forbes Ave adds gym, cultural programming, and community event space to the immediate area.
PennDOT is advancing the I-376 Squirrel Hill Interchange Improvement Project, redesigning the interchange ramps and Forward Avenue near Murray Avenue, with proposed construction currently slated to begin in early 2029 and run through 2031. Separately, a Commercial Street Bridge replacement over the Parkway near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel entrance has an anticipated closure in summer 2026 for demolition and reconstruction. Residents driving to or from the highway should monitor PennDOT updates for periodic detours.
Squirrel Hill South is widely regarded as one of Pittsburgh's more settled residential neighborhoods, with Pittsburgh Police Zone 4 station located on Northumberland Street roughly a mile from the property. As in any urban area, standard awareness is advisable, and prospective renters should consult the City of Pittsburgh or Allegheny County official sources for current crime data and advisories.
